SMU HOSTS NORTHERN LUZON BUSINESS RESEARCH FORUM

by Dr. Cristina G. Gallato, CPA

Research is meant to advance or promote the quality of life of people. The comforts and conveniences of life that people are enjoying at the moment are all products of studies/researches. From the basic necessities to luxuries/comforts, everything is a product of research. Technology, transportation, communication, food, air, water clothing, shelter, cars, the fluorescent lamp, how to induce flowering to the mango tree even if it is not yet its time to bear fruits, etc. are all products of research.

Business research is one of the major areas in which attention has to be paid intently. Business and trade are the main reasons why people of the world are interconnected. A certain plant or product can’t be produced in a certain place for obvious reasons, thus it has to be shared to all peoples of the world. For example, salt can be produced in areas near the seashore but not in the valleys that are far from the sea. Drinking water is very scarce in the Middle East but is very abundant in other countries, in the same manner that oil is very scarce in the Philippines but is very abundant in oil-producing countries. Business and trade are indeed very important in the advancement of any economy.

One of the requirements in the accreditation of graduate programs is the presentation of researches/papers/articles in conferences so that these papers will be peer reviewed and eventually published in research journals. This is the main reason why universities are doing their best to organize and conduct conferences to provide a venue for the presentation of researches/papers/articles of their faculty and students so that their own faculty and students don’t have to get out of the country just to present their studies.

In order to address this issue, the Northern Luzon Business Research Forum was organized and conducted at Saint Mary’s University on November 26, 2008. This forum was a kick off for the International Conference in Management Education and Practice 2009 which will be held at Saint Mary’s University on February 20-22, 2009.

Dr. Felix Asprer, Dean, Philippine Women’s University (PWU) Conrado Benitez Institute of Business Education (CBIBE), president elect of Philippine Council of Deans and Educators in Business (PCDEB), and a notable international speaker/lecturer and researcher, graced the forum as the keynote speaker. He spoke on the rudiments of research and encouraged everyone to embrace the culture of research.
